The history of rotational moulding
Rotational moulding might seem like a modern manufacturing process, but its roots stretch back much further than most people realise. The fundamental principle of rotating a heated container to distribute material evenly has been used for centuries.
Ancient origins
The earliest known use of rotational techniques in manufacturing dates back to ancient Egypt, where potters would rotate vessels over fires to achieve even coating. The Swiss used a similar technique in the 1600s to create hollow chocolate eggs -- rotating moulds filled with liquid chocolate to create an even shell.
The industrial revolution
The first patent for a rotational moulding machine was filed in 1855 by R. Peters in Britain. Early applications focused on metal objects, particularly artillery shells. It was not until the 1940s and 1950s that the process began to be applied to plastics, initially using PVC plastisols.
The polyethylene era
The real transformation came in the 1960s when polyethylene powder became available for rotomoulding. This material was a game-changer: it flowed easily, produced strong parts, and was far more versatile than PVC. The introduction of powdered polyethylene opened up a vast range of new applications and is still the dominant material used in rotomoulding today.
Modern rotomoulding
Today's rotomoulding industry benefits from advanced materials, computer-controlled heating systems, sophisticated mould design, and decades of accumulated process knowledge. Modern machines can produce products of exceptional quality and consistency, from small precision components to enormous tanks and containers.
